Gallivaggio

- Valtellina - Italy

The rocky wall of Gallivaggio, approximately 500 meters high and located within the municipality of San Giacomo Filippo (So), has been monitored since 2011 using a GBInSAR LiSAmobile system. Initially, through periodic monitoring campaigns, an unstable mass of about 5.000 cubic meters was identified, with a projected fall trajectory directly threatening the underlying Sanctuary and the adjacent section of State Road 36.

Starting from 2016, periodic campaigns was transformed into a continuous, real-time monitoring. In the initial years of monitoring, data acquired by the LiSAmobile system facilitated geological-geotechnical modeling and alarm threshold identification. During the fall of 2017 and winter of 2018, the LiSAmobile data revealed an acceleration of movements in the upper part of the wall. Subsequently, on the morning of April 13, 2018, blocks detached from the moving area and tumbled downstream, impacting both the bell tower and Sanctuary, as well as State Road 36. An additional acceleration on May 24, 2018, led to the total closure of the road.

Movements intensified, culminating in a collapse on May 29, 2018. Analysis of hourly displacement speeds of the mass during the last 12 hours highlighted that the GBInSAR LiSAmobile system provided reliable real-time measurements up to minutes before the collapse. In conclusion, this event serves as a significant example of “early warning” capability for a rockslide of moderate dimensions.
